How Neurofeedback Works
Initial Visit & qEEG
Before training sessions begin, a comprehensive assessment called a qEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalography) is performed. This assessment procedure allows the doctor to determine, in a scientifically objective manner, whether your brainwave patterns are dysregulated, meaning different from normal, allowing us to learn a lot about any issues you may be experiencing.
Report of Findings & Treatment Design
During the report of findings, we sit down with you and explain the results of the qEEG in a way that is easy to understand. We try our hardest to make this process as straight forward as possible, so please, ask any questions that come to mind. We want you to understand your results, and the plan we have in place for you.
Getting Started With Neurofeedback Sessions
while the computer records your brainwave activity. These sensors are non-invasive, as NO electrical current is put into your brain. The sensors simply record the brainwaves coming FROM your brain. Information about these brainwaves is displayed on the our monitor.
The software automatically detects when your brainwaves are properly ordered and it feeds that information back to the you. This feedback appears in the form of a game, movie, or sound which tells you that your brainwaves are becoming more ordered. For example, you may watch a picture of a puzzle that is being filled in piece by piece.
As long as your brain waves are moving in an orderly direction, the puzzle pieces are filled in and you will hear a tone. If your brainwave patterns move away from an orderly pattern, the puzzle does not get filled in and no tone is produced. You are actually controlling the completion of the puzzle with your brain, and your brain is learning how to regulate itself. In another design, you may braintrain by watching a movie. You can watch a DVD, youtube, or Netflix video that is being controlled by your ability to regulate your brainwaves. The movie will get brighter as your brain waves normalize and become darker when they become dysregulated.
The Magic of Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity is a fancy word that means “making new connections in your brain”. When you perform neurofeedback, you are actually building new, healthy connections in your brain, and reducing unhealthy connections. This process is what, as many studies have shown, leads to symptom reduction in issues like ADHD, anxiety, insomnia, and more.
Neuroplasticity occurs on a variety of levels, ranging from cellular changes (due to learning) to large-scale changes involved in cortical remapping in response to injury. The role of neuroplasticity is widely recognized in healthy development, learning, memory, and recovery from brain damage.
One of the fundamental principles of how neuroplasticity functions is linked to the concept of synaptic pruning, the idea that individual connections within the brain are constantly being removed or recreated, largely dependent upon how they are used. Basically, “Neurons that fire together, wire together, and neurons that fire apart, wire apart”.
